Angora Club Hike
Wednesday, November 2, 2011, the Angora Hiking Club will be taking a walk on
the Hammond-Warrenton Trail along the Columbia River. This portion of the trail
is a very gentle, level, scenic hike.
The starting place is at the Interpretive Center in Warrenton, at the corner of Main Street and Warrenton Drive at 1 PM.
The walk will proceed West along the trail, to the Warrenton Fiber Company’s
chipping mill, where a short , guided tour of this facility will be given.
The hikers will then proceed West to the Point Adams Research Station which now
houses NOAA’s Fisheries research facility. A staff member will give a short
discussion of the Station’s current activities followed by a Q & A.
All who wish may then proceed to the South Jetty restaurant, 1050 Pacific Drive, Hammond, (503) 861-3547, for refreshments, or hike or ride back (in a shuttle) to their cars at the Interpretive center.
If you have questions about this hike, please call Jim or Kathleen, (503)
861-2802, or email khhudson@q.com.
Note that it is not necessary to be a member of the hiking club to
participate in this hike. For more information about the club, check out the
website, www.angorahikingclub.org. Dues are only $7/year.
The Warrenton Fiber Company is a local family business harvesting and
chipping logs from surrounding areas of the North Coast. It is located at 389 NW
13th Avenue, Warrenton, Oregon. Further information is available on

The Point Adams Research Station is located in a historic building at the

research and support personnel. This facility was first occupied by the US
Lifesaving Service in 1889. After many decades of US Coast Guard service, the
Federal government in 1960 chose to use this strategic location at the mouth of
the Columbia River to support new Federal maritime missions - fisheries
research. Scientific work conducted at the Station includes wetland, river , and
ocean science; fish ecology, marine bird ecology; and restoration ecology. The
Warrenton NOAA website, containing a description and history of the Pt. Adams
facility is available at www.nwfsc.noaa.gov/research/facilities/ptadams/index.cfm.Phone: (503) 861-1818.
